ENTRY 16

BOOMERANG - MG

Dear Mystery Agent:

Nine-year-old Joseph’s little sisters ruin everything. They steal his stuff. Whatever they can’t break gets covered in drool. Even when they start the fight, it’s Joseph who gets in trouble.

All he wants is one thing of his own, one thing that’s his to keep. When he rescues a stray dog from drowning, he thinks his wish has come true. Boomerang is big and friendly and full of energy, the best friend a boy could ask for.

Too bad his parents don’t agree. They plan to get rid of Boomerang as soon as they can find him a new home. Joseph doesn’t have much time to change their minds, but he’ll do whatever it takes--even if it means sharing Boomerang with his sisters.

BOOMERANG is an early middle-grade novel complete at 27,000 words.

  1. This looks like a fun, light story, but I think your query needs to include a word count.

  2. Boomerang is a great name. I think this query is well-written and concise. I would include a word count and any writing experience you might have, and what makes your book not just another dog story. Good luck!

  3. This is cute, fun, and heartfelt, but I'd like to know what separates this from the other boy-and-dog stories out there. Love the title!

  4. I love the name of the dog and the story looks interesting. I think many kids would relate to this.

  5. In general I think you've done a nice job here, but the language could be more dynamic. You've done a good job of staying in a 9-year-old voice but I think it could be more compelling. It sounds like a great theme.

  6. Love the title and all it's implications. Sounds like a cute story, but I agree with others that you need to make it stand out a bit more - somehow. Good luck with this!

  7. This sounds like a really fun story, but what sets it off from other boy/girl animal stories? And what's the word count. I would also state a bio or any writing experience and a thank you. Good luck!
